The autochromes of the 1921-22 Shackleton-Rowett ‘Quest’ expedition
One of Salto Ulbeek's most significant recent collaborations has been with Jan Chojecki, grandson of John Quiller Rowett, the businessman who financed Ernest Shackleton's final expedition aboard the Quest in 1921–22. Jan is now aboard the RV Atlantis, exploring the wrecks of the Quest and Captain Scott’s ship the Terra Nova.
George Tice and Salto Ulbeek
The collaboration between George Tice and Georges Charlier, founder of Salto Ulbeek, began in 2006, when Charlier invited him to bring the original large-format negative of his celebrated image “Petit’s Mobil Station” to Belgium. Drawing on his expertise and experimentation with the medium, Charlier produced a large-format platinum print and the two men continued their collaboration for the next 20 years.
Spotlight: The portraits of Herbert Ponting
Herbert Ponting's portraits of the men of the Terra Nova Expedition remain among the most powerful photographs in the history of exploration. Here, David M. Wilson — great-nephew of Dr Edward Wilson, who perished with Scott on the return journey in 1912 — reflects on what these images tell us about the individuals behind the legend.
